4 Principles to Keep Propelling Forward in Moments of Change

Change is part-and-parcel of the human experience. Whether it’s personally or professionally, every person’s life goes through continuous cycles of evolution. The person you were yesterday, is different from the person you are today. The person you are today, is different from the person you’ll be tomorrow. As creatures of habit, human beings aren’t always accepting of the fact that change is inevitable. In fact, most people instinctively resist change because change brings uncertainty.

Adjust Your Sails to the Wind:

Therapist/Author Barton Goldsmith advises that “Change is constant, so we usually don’t notice the little or the expected changes; it’s when you are caught off-guard that you can get discombobulated. The trick is to know that it is just one of the millions of changes that are going to happen in your life and, good or not so good, do what you can to just roll with it.” Achieving success requires emotional intelligence. It requires enough intuition not only to recognize change, but to adapt to it. Here are a few tips on how to manage change constructively:

1.    Get Informed:

The biggest reason why change is so intimidating is because it catches people off-guard.  It plunges people into a state of not knowing what to expect.  Getting informed is thus the most effective starting-point of adapting to change.  Learn new skills to help you survive, and use them accordingly.

2.    Manage Your Emotional Responses:

Change can trigger a variety of intense emotions.  It can elicit euphoria, or it can provoke despair.  But no matter what you might feel in the moment, be careful not to make consequential decisions motivated by extreme emotions.  Stop yourself from gambling on your future, and use self-control to be wise.  The more impulsive you are in moments of change, the more exposed you’ll be to risk.

3.    Plan Things Out:

Being spontaneous in moments of change can leave you vulnerable to circumstance.  Instead of letting the chips fall where they may, come up with a healthy strategy to cope and evolve.  Use critical thinking to measure the pros and cons of your individual decisions.  Following a plan helps you stay focused on essential goals and principles.

4.    Move Forward:

Dealing with change can often paralyze people.  This is because adapting to change feels overwhelming, depending on how much your goals are affected.  But no matter what you’ve had to sacrifice because of change, always commit to chasing your dreams.  Giving up just because you’ve encountered a speed bump would be a waste of everything you’ve invested.

Conclusion:

Dealing with change is certainly uncomfortable.  But survival is only possible when people are willing to overcome this discomfort.  Times of transition are an opportunity to grow depending on what kind of a perspective you have on changing circumstances.  The most important thing to do is keep an open mind.  Educate yourself, stay sober, and be strategic throughout the highs and lows of change.
