New to Leadership? Here are 4 Intelligent Game-Plans on How to Excel

Being new to leadership can feel very overwhelming.  It triggers a variety of emotions ranging from excitement to fear.  No matter how big or small your responsibilities are though, it’s important to center yourself emotionally when taking on a leadership role.  Exercise self-control so that you don’t end up making impulsive or ill-advised decisions.

Take Things One Step at a Time:

Business Expert John Reh suggests that “The role of the first-time manager is dangerous territory for many… While prior experience in an informal leadership role such as that of product or project manager is helpful, there is much for the new manager to learn and do in the early stages of the role.” Here are a few tips on how to avoid making rookie mistakes as a leader:

1.    Be a Diplomat:

As you create relationships with members of a team, go the extra mile to create a good first impression.  Be kind and respectful.

2.    Avoid the Wrecking-Ball Mentality:

New leaders often want to make their mark in a new environment.  But it can be offensive to introduce yourself by insisting on changing everything about an existing workplace.  Take some time to earn respect before finding fault in a new environment.

3.    Win People Over with Your Actions:

The most effective way to lead is by example.  If you want a team to adhere to a certain set of standards, exemplify them first.  Prove that you’re the type of person who walks the walk.

4.    Be Flexible:

Being open minded makes it possible to adapt your leadership style to a variety of circumstances.  Flexibility in the way you solve problems allows for creative solutions to be developed.

The key to finding success in leadership is to take things in stride.  Some aspects of leadership are easy to predict and prepare for.  But the reality is that leadership is also a very unpredictable experience.  When the time comes for you to encounter the unknown, the most helpful thing you can do is to avoid panicking.  Make the most effective decisions possible, given the knowledge you have, and the resources at your disposal.
